Sedation

woman

Many people are very anxious about dental treatment. We will do all we can to help you if you can discuss your particular fears with us. For some treatments we can offer sedation for suitable patients.

Intravenous sedation (IV) is used to reduce anxiety and fear by giving a patient a single sedative drug (midazolam or `Hypnovel`) via a vein in their hand or arm. The patient will be relaxed enough to allow dental treatment to be carried out. The patient does not go to sleep, but remains conscious throughout the treatment and is able to speak to the dentist during the visit. However, he or she will remember very little about the appointment.
It is a very safe procedure and an ideal for anxious patients.

Pre-operative instructions:-

  1. Have a light snack at least 1 hour before your appointment.
  2. Be accompanied by a responsible adult and be able to assure us that you will not be left on your own for 24 hours after. Your escort must come with you and wait while you are in the surgery. Post-operative instructions will be given to you and your escort.
  3. Ensure your transport home is by car or taxi and not by public transport.
  4. Must not be left on your own for 24 hours after as IV sedation results in memory loss, this can last until the end of the day.
